Cover of the Week

Well, aren't I indulgent? Or aren't I giving? Or aren't you generous and patient? I am undertaking an ambitious task, that is to record a cover song every week and offer it up here for your enjoyment, criticism, suggestions, tears, or laughter. I just feel like covering some of my favorite songs. The idea is an informal little pastime. I will not be fussing around with these. I just want to post some songs that I sit around the house playing.

Now, will I actually do a song a week? Probably not. But one must set goals in life. So instead of sitting around watching a TV this winter, maybe I will take a few hours a week and post a tune. Yeah, still working on some Buffalo Tom songs as well.

And here it is, week one of the Cover of the Week, the Replacements' "Little Mascara."

My review of the song on allmusic.com from years back.

Great cover Bill! Two of my favorite bands for the price of one!

Thannks, Russ. Also forgot to post a place to download, as I assumed one would be able to do so from the player. So here is the download site:

Fantastic tune, fantastic album, fantastic band, fantastic cover.
Well done, my son.

Looking forward to hearing these every week.

By the way, what's up with the backwards pic showing you playing left-handed? An homage to Jimi?
Or possibly Tony Iommi?

Awesome! Thanks Bill for sharing this. Looking forward to the next installment.

very nice Bill, very nice indeed! Do you take requests?

Tom Neuerburg

Bill Janovitz said...

Thanks all. We all need positive reinforcement in our lives, yes?

Lemme answer some questions/comments:

Sure, I am open to requests, but I have my own wishes and have to be inspired. So it is very unlikely to be played. And any requests that get played will require a donation to the charity of my choice, OK? Maybe that will get me going. I'm a deal maker.

The backward picture -- I hadn't even noticed. Must be a setting on the Photo Booth.

Buffalo Tom has done a pretty good amount of covers, Therbs. Check out our B-Sides record. In fact we had our greatest success in the mainstream with a cover of the Jam's "Going Underground" in the UK Typical. Also, I have some covers posted at Billjanovitz.com. And when we were doing the residencies, tons of covers, some of which have been recorded and posted by fans.

What a treat, thanks Bill. In a way I guess it's good BT never got any bigger as you'd probably not bother doing things like this!

Really looking forward to what else you dish out, Bill, although it'll be hard to top this first selection. Just picked up the 'Mats biography "All Over But The Shouting" yesterday, so this is a well-timed treat.

By the way, if you'd like a place to host the download that is free of pop-up ads, just say the word. More than happy to put it (and future ones) up on my server and share the link.

Hi Bill. Well, I'm speechless - what a generous thing to do for those of us who love your music. And the timing of my listening to the cover is so surreal. I just checked into the Westin Copley, and I'm scanning my FB page and answering emails, and noticed your note. Naturally intrigued, I clicked on the link and listened to the song. The feeling it left me with was, "Welcome to Boston, here's a tune to make you feel right at home", that's how great it was to hear your cover.

I saw the 'Mats second last show ever, in Vancouver in 1990 (or 1991, it's a long time ago), and it wasn't until after they broke up that I really got into their music.

I love the BT cover of Going Underground, as well as All Tomorrow's Parties from the Besides album. Regarding requests, if you consider something I might suggest, I will totally donate to a charity of your choice, even with the Canadian dollar sucking right now! :-)

I can't wait to hear more of these covers, and I think it's a great project to undertake, and frankly, it's inspiring. I wish I had my guitar with me, I feel like playing right now. Have a great weekend.

Kind regards,
Randy

Bill,
thats fantastic;
for some reason, I hear a little Tom Petty? in your voice.- You give it a nice Western Interpretation, I like the slower pace too. I always thought "skyway" had alot of Buffalo Tomminess to it, or perhaps "Here comes a regular" has that Buffalo Tom "Sparklers" pace.
Great cover,
Can't wait to hear more.

I love it! Yay!! Can't wait for more!

Can I come sing backup for you sometime? Pretty please? And would you ever consider doing a John Hiatt song?

This was the best thing to come home to today.

This is the best early Christmas present ever! This is also the reason I buy all of your music. You're always giving back...thanks.

I think you would have got a number 1 over here if you'd done Going Underground at a much faster tempo. There are only 2 bands i have every release of and thats BT and The Jam,so don't take this the wrong way, but you murdered that song.I appreciate you had 2 do something different with it,but i think if you'd done it in the spirit of the 1st album you'd have gotten more Radio 1 airplay, which over here is all you need,as it's our only national radio station. The covers nice,as is the ceiling coving in your studio.Keep rocking maaaan.

whats the song that comes up after it ?

I never saw the replacements, but one time I saw tommy stinson open for jesse malin and went drinking with him afterwards, it was a great night. I got home and decided to write a song about it and took a scrap of paper and the only pen I could find - a big black marker pen - and wrote resting on the arm of the couch "I dont care what your thinking, I've been drinking with Tommy Stinson" (the chords are C/G/F/G/C, there are no other words) and then passed out

it was only when I got home after work that day to the wifes fury that I found out the pen had run through the paper completely and I'd written it on the couch

it was also the only time at work when I'd turned up drunk from the night before that people had been impressed with who I'd been out with "uh, sorry I'm late, I was out drinking with the bass player from guns'n'roses"

"first you nap em and you slap em in a high chair" - I think about this and often say it every time I put my kids in the chair

Bill, Christmas comes early!!! Thanks for recording and posting these two gems....I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Johnsburg, Illinois...my favorite Tom Waits song.
BTW, I like think no matter how big Buffalo Tom, Crown Victoria, or any other of your efforts ever gets, you'll stay the same and keep this connection with your fans and friends. Merry Christmas.

bill, just curious, do you use garage band or something more advanced to record these?

Bill Janovitz said...

Hi -- Recordings are done with Pro Tools 7.3.1 on Macbook with MBox, an Audio Technica condenser mic, and a little Bellari tube preamp.

sunnworks said...

wow..does paul know your doing this? or doesnt he talk to you either.

Bill Janovitz said...

Sunn, you're asking about my brother? Not talking to me? Oh, the horror of the thought.

Brad -- Thanks for the note and for the plug at your site. I have linked it, btw. You should all check out Bradley's Almanac, a very popular and great music site.

Everyone else -- thanks. Having a hard time keeping up. I will post something about the requests.

I appreciate your willingnes to put yourself out there and open the communication channels to your fans. I hold you in high esteem with the likes of Bob Dylan, Paul Westerberg, Bob Mould, etc.
However, with this blog....fans like me can talk to you...and you respond. How cool is that?I doubt that those artists I mentioned are doing that.
I've been a fan for 18 years....seen you numorous times...and love your work. All of it! Thanks for providing this venue. (By the way, someone suggested you do Dylan's "Lord Protect My Child"....I second the motion.
